Success. Can you really plan to succeed? Some would say no, but when you study those who have actually achieved different levels of success, it becomes clear that they planned to succeed.

What is success? Often times, when people seek success, they associate it with work, career, money, and financial status. But true success in life is much more. For those who want to experience success in life, it must include their career, family, and loved ones. Having balance in all your life is the only true trait of success.

I remember being a young salesperson interviewing for a position with a large financial services company. I was hired to meet the VP of Sales and we talked at length about the position and the opportunities this company offered to their salespeople. After the interview, as I was being taken to the elevator, I asked the manager accompanying me, “I see his vice president is very successful. He started here years ago and worked his way up through the ranks. What is his family life like?”

The manager smiled and said, “Oh, he’s been divorced twice since he’s been here and is currently a single parent.” I got on the elevator and said to myself, “I don’t want what he has. I’m not interested in sacrificing my family for money or position. I’m doing all this to enjoy a better life with my family.” “

There are some solid ideas that we can adopt to move towards success;

1) Don’t wait for the opportunity; create it – Many entrepreneurs found financial success because they didn’t wait to find what they wanted, they created it. When we look at the increase in the use of computers (Microsoft), by turning our phones into mobile computers (Apple) or electric cars (Tesla), each of these companies created something that didn’t exist before in the way they adopted it.

2) The key to success is to focus on the goals, not the obstacles: No one has experienced great success without great obstacles. Edison tried more than 10,000 to create a light bulb and a fire destroyed his factory and years of work. Einstein was finished for being autistic and unable to learn. Roger Bannister broke the record by running a mile in 4 minutes when it had not been done before him. Time and time again, greatness requires one to overcome obstacles while keeping their eyes on the goal.

3) Self belief and hard work wins success – You must believe that you are great, that you can do great things and that if you work hard success will come. Nothing can be allowed to stand in your way as you pursue success in life.

Success is possible. Keep looking for your way to achieve it.
