Design of a High-Performance Connector Impact Its Performance

The reliability of high-performance connectors can make or break the success of an application. From the harshest industrial environments to the most challenging aerospace and defense applications, these connectors must be capable of resisting shock, vibration, salt spray, water immersion and UV exposure. These connectors also need to provide reliable signal and power transmission.

To meet these demanding requirements, a combination of engineering expertise and high-quality materials is required. For example, the connectors used in a motorsport harness need to be resistant to fuel or lubricants and able to endure over 500 mating cycles. Additionally, they need to be easy for a technician to mate and un-mate in a tight space during a race pit stop.

Souriau engineers work closely with customers to design products that will meet the demands of their applications. This engineer-to-engineer approach is key to our success, and we are proud that many projects we design for customers start out as customer specials but go on to become catalogue products. This is the case of our 8STA series which was originally developed to meet the specific needs of race car harnesses. Our customers continue to use the product today because it delivers the electrical performance, mechanical and environmental performance characteristics they require.

How Does the Design of a High-Performance Connector Impact Its Performance?

In addition to designing products for specific applications, SOURIAU also innovates to reduce the use of environmentally harmful substances in its manufacturing processes. For example, the European REACH regulation bans SVHC (Substance of Very High Concern) chemicals including hexavalent chromium in surface treatments for connectors. The challenge has been to replace hexavalent chromium with alternative methods whilst maintaining the same high-performance electrical, mechanical and environmental properties of the connectors.

Contact spring: The contacts, or pins, in an electrical connector are mechanically formed by the contact spring. This spring is a rigid element that deflects the receptacle contact to generate the contact normal force, which is required to achieve proper alignment during mating. The contact spring should be constructed of a durable material that minimizes resistance and maximizes conductivity for optimal signal transmission.

SOURIAU-Sunbank by Eaton is a world leader in the harsh environment interconnect solutions market with a strong culture of operational excellence. The brand designs, manufactures and markets high performance, high reliability interconnect solutions dedicated to Aviation/Aerospace, Defence & Space, Heavy Industry and Energy & Transportation industries.
