When installing your own laminate countertop/worktops, it is vital to be equipped with the right tools and the right, detailed, easy-to-follow information, as you only get one chance at this task. If you’re confident using DIY tools, then you should be able to install your caps yourself using the methods outlined below.

Laminated covers typically have a rolled laminated front edge which is known as a postform. Postformed caps are by far the most common to buy, as all DIY stores have them in stock. However, the lengths vary from different manufacturers and different DIY stores.

The most common lengths are: 4.1m – (4100mm) Most stores also offer half board sizes for this 2050mm length. 3m – (3000mm) DIY stores mainly supply these lengths. Some stores will even cut them to the length you need for a small fee.

You will have to take into account the sizes of the boards to know exactly how many lengths you need. Firstly, measure the walls of your kitchen, calculate how the corner joint will be cut and measure the length of a worktop, always allowing an extra 100mm if possible. Repeat for all lengths of countertop.

If you are cutting the lengths yourself from full boards, you will need to place the length on two or more sawhorses/co-workers to support it. Measure the desired length and mark ready to cut, remembering to always measure twice. The saying in the profession is (Measure twice and cut once). You can use a traditional fine tooth saw for this or alternatively a jigsaw.

There are two ways that postformed countertops can be installed, each giving you a different look and a different level of ability to adapt. The first, easiest and least time consuming way is to use the thin strips of metal that are simply placed over the joint to hide the cut. This way you just butt the first top to the right at the corner and the second top is attached directly to the front edge of the first top. Stay away from this method if you don’t want to see the unsightly strip of metal sticking out of the joint. They are also known to be unhygienic, as food and drink often get caught between the strip and the top, making it very difficult to remove.

The second way is to cut what is known as a butt and trace join. This will make the joint totally invisible and will give the top a nice flow around your kitchen as there is nothing to break up the surface. This is the totally professional way to cut the board. You will need what is called a countertop/work surface template to allow you to cut one top into the other in the shape of a hockey stick. If you want your blouses to look totally professional with no visible seams, this is what you should be aiming for. Templates are very reasonably priced these days, so don’t let that put you off. If you like challenges, pay close attention to detail, want recognition, satisfaction, and brownie points, then this is your path.
