As a teacher, the beginning of each school year was marked by a motivational speaker encouraging us to be ready to face the thousands of children who were running through our doors the next day. As a Marine, a gift from the Base Commander was often a motivational speaker who could get us up and moving with more motive force than we could normally muster.

Our first day of school was without the students who would soon fill the halls. Our first day of school was just a teachers day with different things planned to make sure the teachers were ready to start the year off right. When the motivational speaker entered the auditorium, he didn’t know what to expect.
An hour later, he was motivated. They made me feel like I had the best job in the world. It was going to be great. I was doing the world an honorable service, and I had a right to be proud. I walked out of that auditorium ready to face any challenge that might arise.
A week later, I had forgotten about that speech when I felt the pressure to communicate with my students. I felt that I was failing as a teacher because I was not living up to my own expectations. That speech was no longer serving me because although it was full of motivation, it lacked tools.
You can’t just pick people up and leave them hanging. You have to give them the tools they need to make it work. Most motivational speakers just inspire you for the day, but leave you with something missing.
Without even getting a chance to meet Tony Robbins, he helped me change my life. Sometimes we can’t be where he’s going to be in San Diego, New York or anywhere else he might be for a weekend. Sometimes his events are not the perfect time for us to fit into our lives. But he has many resources that we can take with us.
