The result is loss of steering, braking and power control.” It goes without saying that hydroplaning is dangerous and if you don’t react properly it could be fatal not only to you but to others as well. Here are some tips on how avoid and deal with hydroplaning:

1. Check the condition of your tire
Inspect your tire threads, make sure you’re not in the rain driving on worn tires as the threads are supposed to help distribute water around the tire for increased traction. Don’t forget to make sure your tires are properly inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI.

2. Slow down and be alert
when the roads are wet The faster you drive, the harder it is for your tires to spread the water evenly. As much as possible, be vigilant and stay away from puddles and standing water that can cause your tires to lose traction with the road surface, also avoid driving in the outside lanes where water tends to pool.

3. Avoid hard braking and taking sudden sharp turns
This goes hand-in-hand with tip #2: Driving too fast can cause you to brake hard, which could cause your tires to lock up and lose traction. Taking sudden sharp turns can also lead to a sudden loss of traction.

4. If it happens, stay calm
It’s important to always stay calm on the road, because sometimes no matter what you do or how many precautions you take, you could still be a victim of hydroplaning. In case it happens, head back down the slide to maintain control, once you have regained some traction back slowly, but not too much, to avoid sneaking in and spinning out of control.

5. If it turns, use both feet
If you can’t avoid the spin, the best thing to do is drive onto the slide and hit the brake and clutch to try and bring the car to a complete stop. Keep in mind, however, that if the car is about to lose traction (more like a skid), follow tip #1. Take #4 and try to regain traction through smooth, gentle corrections.
