Who would have thought that someone would combine a GPS navigator with an mp3 player?

Nextar mp3 player is actually a navigator with an SD memory card slot to play your favorite songs during a road trip. A pretty good idea all things being equal, but does the unit stand up to user tests?

Characteristic

• 1.6 million points of interest
• Integrated map of all 50 states and Canada
• Bluetooth for hands-free calling
• SD slot for mp3
• Built-in lithium ion battery

advantage

Not getting lost on the go is always a nice bonus, but adding the mp3 feature was a perfect touch. Now you can travel with the confidence of getting to the right address on time while listening to your saved music.

No more searching for radio stations while traveling from one area to another. The Nextar mp3 player and GPS combo covers all your basic travel needs in one unit.

The 4.3-inch touch screen is a huge improvement over previous versions. It may not sound like a very large display, but mounted on your vehicle’s dash it really stands out.

Nextar mp3 player and GPS combo also has text to speech function. That means directions and points of interest will be spoken in clear English. A very useful feature, indeed.

If you have more than one vehicle, you’ll love the way Nextar’s mp3/player/GPS combo mounts. It simply mounts to the vehicle’s vents, making it easy to transfer from one car to another. This is also useful if you are traveling with a friend or family member.

Cons

Some users had problems with the unit’s delayed reaction when giving instructions. For example, it can tell you to turn a little late, like after you’ve passed the road! Perhaps this was an issue with only one unit missing, however common sense would dictate that while driving you should be aware of road signs and negate the possibility of this occurring. Of course, if the unit is supposed to be accurate, then it should be, particularly considering they cost a couple of hundred dollars.

There were other similar problems, such as being instructed to make a U-turn at inappropriate places and messages that no route was found to this destination. Again, this could have been a problem with a particular drive, only time will tell.

The frozen screen on the Bluetooth screen was also a reported issue with the Nextar mp3 player and GPS unit.

customer ratings

Ratings are evenly split on the love/hate scale. One customer had all of the issues listed above, however, no one else experienced such extreme issues. Little things like hotels on the wrong side of the street and things like that, but nothing major.

general

The price is right on the Nextar mp3 player and GPS. For a little less than the competition, you get a navigation device that doubles as an mp3 player.
