Grungy candles are a quick and easy DIY candle to add to your home decor. All it takes is 15 minutes from when you have an abutment in hand to the finished project, and it’s cheap too. You can find the materials in your kitchen, garden, and craft area. You don’t have to be a candle maker to make and enjoy your own dirty candle.

Here’s a little lesson on why primitive and dirty go hand in hand.

The word grungy is a slang term for dirty, dingy, grimy, and grimy. It is used to describe dirty conditions or characteristics of fashion. Grungy is associated with primitive decor due to its simple, rustic style.

Primitive means original, characteristic of an early stage of development and a self-taught artist.

When you make dirty candles, do you think about the early development stage of candle making and the natural elements? I think of a simpler time that uses a lot of creativity to decorate the home. When I create grunge candles, I think of candles with a realistic, homey feel.

Materials needed:

  1. Candle wax or a ready-made pillar candle
  2. Pillar silicone mold – if you don’t have a pillar candle
  3. Modge Podge
  4. Spices, herbs, grated lemon or orange peel
  5. Fragrance oil Depending on the spice used, if you are making your own candle
  6. paint brush
  7. wax paper
  8. Wick
  9. wick pin

Addresses: *Note: these instructions steer you away from making your own pillar candle

  • Melt the wax and pour it into a silicone pillar mold.
  • Take the wick pin and place it in the center of the mold.
  • Secure the wick pin with 2 tightly bound bamboo skewers.
  • Take the pillar out of the mold, pull out the wick pin from the center of the pillar and insert the wick into the hole
  • Place wax paper on cookie sheet.
  • Add or mix spices on the wax paper
  • Take the modge podge, dip your brush in it and paint a strip down one side of the pillar candle.
  • Roll or sprinkle the spices on that strip of modge podge
  • Then paint another strip on the candle and add or roll spices on that strip
  • Continue with the above method until the pillar is completely covered in spices.
  • Seal the spices to the candle by applying more modge podge or spraying the pillar with a matte finish sealer
  • Let the pillar candle dry for 48 hours.

If you have any wax left over, melt it and sprinkle it on the candle. It will give a nice wax dripping look on the sides.

Caveat – this is not a candle to burn. If you decide to sell these grunge candles or give them away, be sure to affix them with a “do not burn” warning label.

Add some dried apples and oranges, rose hips, and dried herbs to a wooden bowl. Place your new dirty primitive candle inside. Clever! Instant primitive decor for your home.
