Flea control or eradication is the reason products like Capstar are made and have become popular over the years. All cat and dog owners know how fleas cause problems and illnesses for their beloved pets. Fleas are tiny, wingless, brown to red insects that suck the blood of their host. When you see your dog or cat scratching an area, this may be an indication that fleas are present. Some pets are more sensitive to the bite and may have allergic reactions to flea bites. Fleas do not pose any danger to humans, except that they can also bite humans. These insects live in hot climates or when the ground freezes in cooler climates.

Once you notice that your pet has fleas, a visit to the vet should be made. The vet could probably use a flea comb and when “flea dirt” or “dried bloody flea droppings” are found, flea control or treatment will be recommended. The veterinarian is the best resource to ask about the control, maintenance and annihilation of fleas on your beloved pet.

One of the best flea treatments available is Capstar. This flea control tablet is an oral medication that will kill adult fleas immediately with residual effects lasting up to 24 hours. Capstar dosage is based on your dog’s weight, so you need a veterinarian’s recommendation to ensure your dog receives the correct dosage.

For a heavy flea infestation, the treatment should be repeated two or three times, but do not give Capstar more than once a day. The product can be used in conjunction with over-the-counter flea collars, topical liquids and oral tablets for maximum and faster control.

To kill flea eggs, larvae, and emerging adult fleas in your home, first vacuum thoroughly, then use a commercial flea fogger or flea bomb. Before starting the house treatment, remove all animals and people from the house.

Capstar (nitenpyram) is manufactured by Novartis Animal Health, which is also responsible for other veterinary products. The product features are:

Starts working in 30 minutes after treatment.
Safe for puppies and kittens 4 weeks of age and older, 2 pounds or heavier
Safe for pregnant or lactating bitches.
Over 90% of fleas are killed within 4 hours for dogs and 6 hours for cats
No cleanup unlike some liquid drop flea control products
Capstar is mess free as it is an oral application so there is no odor while you treat your dog.
Because it is taken orally, it is not washed off or rubbed off.

Capstar can be taken with or without food and is safe to use with most other medications. The product is ideal for breeders, kennels, groomers, clinics, shelters or multi-pet households, anywhere flea exposure or reinfestation is imminent. An increase in itching may occur after administration, due to the effect the drug has on the nervous system of the flea.
