This card trick is pretty simple in principle, but the audience will never figure it out. You will be convincing the audience that you have powerful X-ray abilities and can look through the top card of a deck and read what it is. Don’t worry though, as it will allow a helpful audience member to review the cards to make sure they are not marked.

This is how it will appear to your astonished audience. You ask someone in the audience to shuffle the cards and verify that it is not a marked deck or anything like that. He then takes the deck, shuffles it one more time just in case, and then returns the deck.

After they are holding the deck, you tell them to separate the deck into four equal piles. They do not have to be exactly the same, only approximate. Then stun the audience by looking straight through the top card to the other side, reading the name and value of the card. You will be able to do this easily many times and you will never be close to being discovered.

Here’s the trick. As you shuffle the deck one last time, take a quick look at the bottom card and secretly place it on top of the deck. This may take a bit of practice, but after doing it several times at home, it will be natural in front of others.

Once you know which card is at the top, you are good to go. Watch them as they cut the deck into four piles and remember which one has the card you just saw. Let’s call it card one to make it easier. Choose any stack that does not contain “card one”, but actually says “card one”. Then pick it up and place it face down in front of the pile. Remember this card now as card two. You will need someone to remember all four cards, so that you can reveal them all at once. On the next pile of cards, you say “card two” and look at the next card, which is actually card three. The trick is to stay one step ahead of yourself.

After you’ve finally reached the pile with “card one” at the top, you will actually be saying “card four”. Then, with the four cards face down, the audience member who was recording the cards calls them back. After they do this, you quickly flip all the cards over, showing them your accurate readings. This requires a bit of memory, so it can be helpful to practice with your friends before doing it in front of strangers. Have fun.
