I made the switch to Canon about a decade ago, with a mid-range digital camera. I was so impressed with the quality that every few years since, I have bought other Canon cameras and accessories. It was just last year that I decided to invest in the Canon EF 50mm 1.8 II lens.

Full disclosure: I work for an auction house, and then I photograph the various antiques and art pieces, I need a lens that brings the sharpest details into focus, whether it’s macro photography up close or from a distance. After some research, all customer reviews pointed to the Canon EF-50mm as tea best lens to get. I have friends who take nature and concert photography and use the Canon EF50mm II for all of their action shots and candid images.

When the box arrived at my house, the first thing I noticed was how small and light the 50mm was. Actually, the Canon EF 50mm II weighs just under 5 ounces. I immediately attached the 50mm lens to my Canon SLR and started putting it to the test.

I first try it out on some old coins I was researching. The Canon 50mm II brought detail and edge work into sharp view better than any other lens or magnification device I had been using! The next place I went with my Canon camera was the backyard, where some flowers were growing. I figured if my friend used his 50mm II for wildlife photography, I’d be fine trying it out for myself. At long range and even up close, the Canon EF 50mm ii displayed both leaves and flowers in an extraordinarily vivid view. Everything from the color contrast to the striations and veins of the leaves and petals came into beautiful focus.

After taking a few photos in various lighting environments and of various subjects, I went back to my computer to load the images onto my monitor, and was absolutely blown away by the performance of the Canon EF 50mm lens. I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary when taking these test photos. Normally I find my work a bit below average, but the Canon EF 50mm II more than made up for it! I was seeing vivid, brilliant detail and color like never before.

Usually when I look at my photos on a big screen monitor, I end up being a very harsh critic. After using the Canon EF 50mm/2 for both macro and telephoto shots, I was blown away. The 50mm EF II lens brought out details that would have otherwise remained hidden with my other lenses, and my subject really stood out in long-range images. The Canon EF 50mm II made my photos look a million times better, and for less than $100!

Fast forward a few months, and I’m still working at the auction house, and I have a big ego because I hear customers comment on how good the pictures look. I’ve even gone so far as to start taking nature photography for my blog, and even have a few setups in a local gallery. I’m sure my skill as a photographer has improved a bit, but if you ask me, I’d honestly say it’s the Canon EF 50mm II lens that’s doing most of the work. I’m even dabbling in portrait photography and showcasing local fashion designers.

I can see why the Canon 50mm II is used by wedding photographers, wildlife and sports journalists and receives so much praise from professionals and enthusiasts alike. Believe me, the best investment you can make for your SLR camera is the Canon EF 50mm III Lens. Lightweight, versatile, and capable of bringing your entire subject to high-definition detail, the 50mm II is like finding a diamond that sells for jewelry prices. Seriously, it’s so good.

I found my brand new Canon 50mm for less than $100, and I can’t imagine how I ever took photos without it. I don’t care if you have decades of experience or if you’re new to photography, the Canon EF 50mm lens will make all your images pop with incredible detail and vivid contrast. If I could pick just one piece of gear to use with my camera, I’d give it all up if I could keep my Canon 50mm II lens.
